“We Become What We Think About.” This quote is from The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale, which is considered one of the most important inspirational recordings of all time. It may sound simple, but it carries a deep message.
Mindset Equals Reality
If a person focuses on success, this is what he or she will attract in their lives. Unfortunately, the opposite is also true. If all a person thinks about is failure, that’s what will occur in his or her life.
That’s why carrying your goals around with you is so important. This can mean "literally" carrying them around, like keeping them in your wallet or taping them to the visor of your car(like I do). Or it can be just another feature on your smart phone. By constantly surrounding yourself with your goals it enforces them deep into your subconscious mind.
I have seen others create vision boards to visualize their desires. They pin images that represent their goals to a bulletin board or tape them to their refrigerator.
Envision Your Goals
However you choose to look at them, consistently seeing your goals means they are that much more likely to come to you. Think of it this way. If you choose to look at your goals five times a day, that’s five times that you remind yourself of what you want. Meanwhile, if you don’t choose to articulate them or look at them, they could just slip away, as fleeting thoughts often do.
Keeping your goals immediately accessible will also come in handy during times of frustration. If you find yourself faced with an obstacle that seems insurmountable, the tendency might be to lose hope. But if you have your goals right there in front of you, you will be that much more likely to find the inspiration you need. Then you can navigate around whatever is in your way.
Counteract Negativity
We all have negative thoughts. So it’s best to counteract these tendencies with a healthy flow of positive input, such as reading inspirational books and listening to motivational podcasts. Nightingale’s work would certainly be a good place to start.
